Application Tips
Here are a few tips that will help you get an interview for that perfect job:
- Remember that when you apply for a job you are likely to be competing with a number of other applicants so it is important to ensure that your application is presentable, accurate and makes a good impression.
- Most job adverts will indicate a procedure to follow in order to apply for the job; it is very important that you follow this procedure as it is a key part of the application process. You may be asked to do any of the following-
- Forward your CV
- Phone for an application form/pack
- Download an application form/pack
- Phone for further information
- If you are offered the opportunity to phone then I would always take this opportunity, just make sure that you are prepared as this phone call may lead on to an informal telephone screening and this is your opportunity to make a positive first impression.
- If you are asked to forward your CV then it is a good idea to include a brief cover letter in support of your application. Pick out the key requirements within the advert and sell these back in your cover letter, be concise and do not ramble on for pages as this will not help! Before you forward your CV check whether you can adapt it in any way to better suit the position that you are applying for. (If you don’t have a CV then please download our CV template)
- You must make sure that you spell & grammar check your CV and any supporting letter as badly written CV’s can reflect lack of attention to detail and may have a negative effect on your application.
- You can always ask for help form family or friends if you need it.
- Always make sure that you have included contact details within you application; your home address, mobile number and personal email are recommended.
- If you are sending your CV and cover letter by post then always use good quality stationery
- If you have to hand write an application form then it is a good idea to photocopy or download a few “spares” so that you can practice before completing a final copy. Fill out the application form as directed, using the correct coloured ink; make sure that your application form is completed neatly and is easy to read.
- Make sure that your application arrives on time; if you are posting it then allow enough time for it to arrive promptly.
- Double check everything before sending it; the time that you spend doing this is worth the investment!
